Styling A Dress Turned Skirt

Styling A Dress Turned Skirt, Atlanta fashion stylist, Top black blogger, how to style a sequin skirt

I’m such a skirt girl, which is funny now because I hated wearing skirts and dresses growing up. Once I reached the point in my life where I could decide what I wanted to wear, you couldn’t pour me into a skirt or a dress. Now I have more skirts and dresses than pants. The irony!

So the story behind this “skirt” is that it was once a strapless dress that I thrifted a couple of years ago. Although it was too big as a dress, I couldn’t leave it behind. This dress was going to work in my life somehow.

The cool part about wearing dresses as skirts is that it gives you the ability to extend the life of your wardrobe. The easiest way to style a dress as a skirt is to layer a shirt, sweater or jacket over the top part to conceal the top portion of the dress. Adding a belt helps to hide the fact that your skirt is really a dress.

I finally made the decision to get the dress altered after attempting to make it work as a dress. But before officially converting the dress into an actual skirt, I styled it as a high-waisted skirt on a client (find the look in my portfolio.)

Although I thrifted my skirt, I’m sharing links to a few places places you can grab a sequin skirt similar to mine (plus I’ve been eyeing these for myself.)

- This one from Asos / This fringed one from H&M / This mini one from Free People / This one from Kohl’s is cute -

Style tip: If you have any old dresses still hanging in your closet, you should consider, if possible, transforming them into skirts. Have you ever styled a dress as a skirt or a skirt as a dress? If so, share your tips or tricks in the comments.
