How I Overcame My Shopping Addiction

Shopping Addiction, Top Atlanta blogger, Pleated skirt street style, melodiestewart.com

Hello my name is Melodie and I am addicted to shopping… Or at least I use to be.

Last year, a few months before our vow renewal, packages were arriving at our door step almost every day. After about the 7th package my husband put his foot down and told me to stop shopping. I was devastated! How was I going to resist not being able to buy all the cute clothes, shoes and accessories that caught my eye.

Although the Mr put a halt to my mini (and frequent) shopping sprees, it was only temporary; just until we got through our renewal in January. Going on an (involuntary) shopping fast was a huge eye opener. No more impulse buying. No more buying because the deal is to good to pass up. And as painful as it was (at first) I really needed it. It forced me to actually wear the old and new things already in my closet. Also after about a month I noticed a few extra coins sitting in my account since I wasn’t spending money on things I didn’t even need.

During my no shopping period I learned a few things…

-      I shopped out of FOMO (fear of missing out).  I felt that if I didn’t get the item then I’d miss out on it forever – especially if the item was on sale.

-      I shopped because I was bored and had the money to spend.

-      I shopped if I was in a bad mood or a good mood. Shopping was a mood!

-      I shopped if I saw another style influencer with something I wanted.

-      I shopped just because.

Realizing that I have plenty of clothes in my closet and understanding that I didn’t need to buy every single item I saw was major. Truth be told most of the stuff I was buying I wasn’t immediately wearing anyway (I mean I still have items I’ve never worn from two and three years ago - sad right). This is why I’m on my Shop Your Closet journey. Not only am I saving money, I’m rediscovering different ways to wear a few of my fave pieces. Aaannnddd, I know longer have to deal with buyer’s remorse - the sense of regret after having made a purchase.

Nowadays I’m learning to be more intentional about how I spend my money. The level of discipline I’ve achieved has been quite rewarding. However for you that may still struggle with excessive shopping or overspending you’re not alone. If I’m being honestly I still have moments when I fight (mentally) against the urge to shop (I’ve lost a few times). And though I’ve not quit shopping entirely, I’ve curtailed it a lot.

If you want to cut down on shopping so much, let me share with you a few steps I’ve taken to help me maintain the need to shop, shop, shop.

-       Don’t buy it the first time you see something.  Wait at least two weeks or more and if after waiting a few weeks you still feel the same way about the item and it’s in your budget - buy it.

-        Ask yourself do I really need this item.  Do I have something similar already that works?

-        Shop your own closet. Look for ways to re-wear items you already have.

-        Organize your closet so that it’s easier for you to see what you have. Get rid of old things that make you feel like you ‘need’ to go shopping.

These are just a few things I’ve done over the last few months to keep me from falling off the shopping wagon. I hope you found this (long) post valuable. Drop a line in the comments and let me know.

Style Tip: Ditch The Heels For Sneakers

Atlanta personal stylist, Top Atlanta blogger, melodiestewart.com, sneakers street style

There’s a quote floating around the internet that says - “Chase your dreams… in high heels of course.” Girl please, from now on, I’m chasing my dreams in comfortable shoes.

It seems that within the few months leading up to my 40th birthday last year my desire to wear heels has dwindled drastically. Strangely enough I can’t even tell you why. What’s funny is that growing up I was a tomboy and avoided heels like the plague. Then one day I was all girly and heels were my bestie. Now-a-days I rarely wear them.

Pairing sneakers with dresses, skirts or suits is all the rave now, although it’s not a trend that hasn’t been seen before.  However wearing the right sneakers can definitely make a statement.  In fact, Serena Williams worn sneakers to the Met Gala and I don’t blame her.  It’s just proof that comfort and style can go hand in hand.

I won’t go as far as to say that sneakers are the new heels, but if the shoe fits (is that lame or what). While I’m not trying to turn you into a sneakerhead, having a pair or two of stylish and fashionable sneakers is worth it and your feet will thank you. So the next time you get dressed, think about giving your look a different vibe by featuring a cute sneaker.

A Must Have: The Little Black Dress (LBD)

Top Atlanta Blogger, Atlanta Personal Stylist, Little Black Dress

Guys, I have a confession. Up until a few weeks ago, I didn’t have a little black dress hanging in my closet. Which kinda makes me a hypocrite since I preach to my style clients all the time about the importance of maintaining the basic closet staples in their wardrobes at all times. And a LBD is definitely a basic staple. Plus being a personal stylist, you would think that I’d have at least 2 maybe 3 LBD options hanging in my closet.

It might be because I’ve never been in a place where I needed to wear a black dress. However, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t have one on ready - If you stay ready you won’t have to get ready!

Here’s the thing…. you can Google “little black dress” and get back a million and one results from online fashion magazines, style influencers and such from around the globe giving you all kinds of tips and advice on how to wear and why you need a little black dress. While I don’t have anything new to add, I just want to be the millionth and two influencer giving my opinion on the matter, okayyyyyy.

Now that we’re in holiday party season, it’s probably a good idea not to wait til the last minute to figure out what you’re going to wear. However, if you’re like me and your need (no calling in life is) to win best dressed where ever you go (even if there isn’t a contest) leaves you stressing over what the heck to wear… the LBD can always be counted on to deliver.

But hold on girlfriend let’s not just go for some plain ol basic black dress, instead opt for something that garners whispers and stares. A textured dress such as sequins (yasssss), leather (come on now), tulle (girl you betta) are great options to look for if you’re looking for a banging black dress. The ever sexy mini dress with a pair of killer OTK boots. Go back in time and grab inspired looks from the 70’s or 80’s era or later.

If you already have a little black dress and you want to jazz it up a bit, try grabbing a chunky necklace or some type of statement making accessory. Don’t forget your shoes can be a statement piece as well. Layering with a cute biker jacket or fancy outer wear piece is a good idea too. All I’m saying is you don’t have to be basic and boring wearing a LBD.

The Secret To Getting Away With Not Wearing Heels

Atlanta Personal Stylist, Top Atlanta Blogger, Melodie Stewart

If I had to guess the last time I wore heels (I mean high heels) was probably sometime early last year. I could be wrong. What I do know is that it’s been a good hot minute since I last graced these Atlanta streets with heels on. Honestly I don’t even know when or why but I’ve sorta fallen out of love with them. Now my preferred heel height of choice these days are 2.5 to 3 inches (anything higher is almost out of the question).

Finding the right style shoe to compliment your look is good, but comfort should come first. I know I’m not the only woman who endured pulsing, constrictive, numbing pain as a result of wear an ol nasty pair of heels you just had to have because is killed your look. And it made you feel all warm on the inside when you saw people looking and shouting out compliments on your dope footwear.

Well guy’s I’m over it. Ya’ll can have the high heels, just slide me over a cute kitten heel and I’m good love (wink wink). I can see the side eye you’re giving me and saying to yourself, naw sis, I’m good on the kitten heels. No worries, if you refuse to get into the kitten heel trend, my next fave flat shoe option is a sneaker. Not just any sneaker, a sneaker with attitude.

Paring sneakers with your look is easy, effortless and can add the same level of character to your look that a heel can. Worn with a skirt (long or short), a midi or mini dress, jeans, trousers or a suit. Sneakers is all the rave these days.

Since it seems that I’m on a no heels campaign, my shoe goal is to search out and find unique sneaker styles that will provide me with no-fail looks to keep you guys inspired.

You don’t have to be a sneaker head to get into this trend. Are you a fan of sneakers or you’re a heels girl til the end?

Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone With This Ankara Wrap Shirt

Atlanta Personal Stylist, Top Atlanta Blogger, Ankara Print Street Style

*This top was sponsored by SGTC by Détóké

One trend that I really like, but rarely wear is the off the shoulder trend (OTS).  You might even shake your head at the craziest reason why... I feel all saggy when I don't have on a strapped bra.  I know, crazy right?  And before you ask, yes I own a good strapless bra, I just feel more secure with the straps.

Opting to wearing this Ankara wrap shirt off the shoulders was a stretch for me and slightly out of my comfort zone.  But before I get into why I decided to step out of my comfort zone, let's take a moment to reveal in how amazing this top is?  First of all Ankara (or African print) is gorgeous in and of itself.  The array of different colors, patterns and styles is just so beautiful.  I can't wait to wear this top again.

Now back to me stepping out of my comfort zone.  Wearing this top is a bit out of my style realm.  Which is why I was a little over whelmed when I took it out of it package.  The vibrant colors and print, along with these voluminous sleeves had me like woah!  I thought how the heck am I going to style this.  Once I tried it on and played with a few different style options (all while my husband cracked jokes) surprisingly I actually loved how it looked draped off the shoulder.

Initially I wanted to dress up this top with either a cute skirt or pants, but that's expected.  So I went with these distressed white jeans and Adidas sneakers.  My little neon yellow clutch was the perfect pop of color (not that this look needed a pop of color).  Adding the clutch was like the cherry on top.  Over all, I'm pleased with how this look came together.  Styling this top from IG acct, Style Goes To Church was fun and I can't wait to wear it again.

You should definitely check SGTC out on Instagram.  And you're in luck, they actually just released 13 new designs, but don't take too long the designs are limited.

How To Make Long Shorts Look Totally Cool

Atlanta personal stylist, top atlanta blogger, atlanta street style

I never really got into wearing shorts, especially shorts that showed too much thigh meat.  Reason 1. I had scrawny legs, but the main reason is because growing up in the church we couldn't wear pants or shorts.  Now that I'm an adult and can decide what I want to wear, short shorts are still a style I kinda shy away from.

If you're like me and short shorts aren't your thing, but you still want to rock a shorts ensemble, this look is for you.  Now-a-days it seems like the shorts are getting shorter and shorter.  I mean, some girls (and grown women) are walking these streets in shorts so short they may as well be underwear; booty cheeks out and everything (smh and giving the side-eye at the same time).  I don't get it, but to each their own.

In this look I'm sharing how to treat longer length shorts the same way you would a pair of shorter shorts or even a pair of jeans.  While most tend to go the T-shirt route when wearing denim, I chose to wear this off-the-shoulder black & white striped shirt (also worn HERE + HERE).  And because I absolutely love this marigold colored blazer I thought adding it to this look would make a great statement.  It's vibrant, light weight and perfect for this long shorts outfit (check out the first time I wore it HERE).

Whenever I'm shopping for myself or a client, the goal is to find pieces that are unique and that will make people stop and tell you how fabulous your ensemble is (I won't lie, I love that part).  That's where these super cute sneakers (first time wearing them in this look) with printed scarf adjustable laces come in to make this look stylish and trendy.  A mini book bag purse, some arm candy and a dope pair of shades.... Boom Shakalaka - A totally cool way to make long shorts look awesome.

I hope this look inspires you to think outside the box.  You'll never know if you like it or actually look good unless you give it a try.  I challenge you to spend a little more time and effort in your closet, you just might shock yourself at what you came come up with.  Btw... wanna see how I've styled these shorts before -- go HERE, HERE + HERE and that one time I wore a shorter pair of shorts HERE.

Tell me, would you try this look or something similar to it?  If not, what are your reservations for not trying this look?  Let's chat in the comments below.

Proof That You Can Wear Black In The Summer

black in summer, top atlanta stylist, top atlanta blogger

Of all the colors to wear in summer, black is probably your last go-to color.  But did you know that black helps to keep you cool?  Black absorbs the suns heat rays that try to come and make you sweaty and gross.  Christian Dior said it best: “You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion.”  Today I'm showing you how I'm rocking this all black look.

Knowing how to wear black in the warmer months can be tricky for some people.  Especially if most of your black pieces are fall/winter pieces.  In an effort not to give off goth vibes, you'll need to stick with light weight fabrics - such as chiffon, light linen or seersucker.  The goal is to make sure your material is breathable.  Walking around feeling like you're in a sauna is not the business.

If you follow trends, then you should have noticed that sheer or chiffon is in.  And because the thrift gawds were on my side, I came up on this sheer floral embroidered top which (in the past) I would have never even considered.  What I like most about this top is that it allows me to be completely covered, while still showing a little bit of skin.

This top can be styled a few ways, but for this looked I opted for this knee length black skirt (also thrifted).  The volume and the length of this skirt really works for the hot weather, allowing for plenty of ventilation for my short legs and mini-thick thighs.  Another big plus for this skirt is that it comes with pockets, which we all now that pockets just make everything in life better.

The first time I wore this look was to a spring wedding (see pic of me and hubs below).  My original look didn’t pan out, so I took Christian Dior’s advice and wore all black.  The only difference with the wedding look and this look are my MACEE LACE UP SNEAKER from SHOEDAZZLE and this colorblocked box shape clutch (picked up a few months ago at Forever 21).  Honestly, if I'd had these sneakers before the wedding I probably worn have worn them then.  *STYLE TIP: Adding sneakers to this outfit (or any dressy look) just gives your outfit a sporty vibe and makes you the coolest person in the room.

As always, I hope that this look will inspire you to dress outside the box or making you think of other ways to dress up your formal wear.  Drop a line in the comments, I’m curious to know your thoughts on wearing black or dark colors in the summer.

5 Simple, Yet Cool Ways To Nail The White-T Trend

If you don't have a white tee in your wardrobe, shame on you!  It's hands down one of the easiest item of clothing to keep in your closet.  It's literally a classic and super comfortable.  To date I probably have at least 10 different white tee's.  While I'm only giving you 5 really easy ways to style this closet staple, the possibilities are endless.

Pairing a slightly longer tee over some distressed denim with a colorful blazer and a killer pair of heels for a street glam look is everything, right?  And if you want to be super cool, try tucking in the front of your shirt.

In some cases a V-neck tee is so much better than a regular crew neck.  Why?  They make you look a lot cooler - wink, wink!  But really it's only a matter of personal preference.  V-necks can give your look a little sex appeal.

Dressing down a fancy bottom with a white tee is not as hard as it may seem.  Whether you're sashaying around town in a shiny gold sequin skirt or an all black leather mini; with your statement accessories and a bad girl attitude... You've now become the IT girl!

While I'm not a huge fan of crop tops, they are so cute.  They can be worn with so many different pieces in an array of styles.  And before you completely write off not wearing them, give it a try.  I'm pretty sure there's a way for you to shine in a crop.

Graphic tee's can directly express who you are without you even having to open your month.  What better way to make a statement then to "say it with ya chest" - Kevin Hart  Don't be afraid to sub out a plain white tee and go for the way cooler graphic tee.

Black Dress + White Sneakers

black dress, white sneakers, gold accessories, black white sunglasses, forever21, street style, natural hair fashion, Atlanta Stylist, Style blogger, Atlanta blogger, athleisure, Black blogger, black girl magic, street fashion

Well...  I cannot even begin to tell you how this past week and a half has been for me.  I feel like I've been running none stop since mid February.  Aaannddd you wouldn't believe what happened to me two Thursday's ago

I was in a minor car accident.  Yep my first car accident since I've been driving.  My car was damaged and I've been driving around in a rental car, which sucks!  Anywho enough about that....

Now that we're on the cusp of spring, I'm starting to transition my wardrobe from winter to spring.  Incorporating your winter pieces into your spring wardrobe can quickly give your style a fresh feel.  If styled properly.  I originally bought this dress in the fall.  Although the dress has short sleeves, I thought of several ways to style this dress that could easily take me through all 4 seasons.

Here's

how I styled it a few months back while in New York.  By adding layers I was able to create a stylish look all while attempting to stay warm.

With the weather starting to warm up, I switched up the look just a tad.  I went with the athleisure street style.  Have you ever thought about wearing sneakers with a dress just to give your look a more playful touch?  You should try it sometime.

Before you get to the pics below, I've got something to tell you, but promise not to tell my thrifting buddies.... Let it be our little secret.  Okay here goes!  This look is completely NOT thrifted!!!!! Not a single item.  Although I've been thrifting since my teens, the past few years I've only shopped at thrift stores.  For whatever reason I refused to shop retail – crazy right?  Now I shop almost anywhere, mainly because I’m a shopaholic.  I even like grocery shopping.

Are you ready for spring?  What spring trends are you most excited about?  Let's talk about it below.
