Swapping Out My Skinny Jeans For Baggy Jeans

Melodie Stewart, Oversized Jeans Street style, Atlanta blogger

Growing up I wasn't allowed to wear pants (one day I’ll share why) which meant anytime I snuck and wore them they weren't mine and they were often too big.  When the time came where I could openly wear pants, my go-to size was still the baggy jeans.  There were a few reasons why, but the main reason was that I was pint-sized, and I didn’t want people to see just how tiny I was.

But that all changed once I got to college.  All of a sudden, I wanted to change how I dressed.  So, to shake things up a bit, I threw out all my too big jeans and jumped on the skinny jeans bandwagon which I’ve been riding that out ever since.

In recent months, I’ve noticed that my personal style is slightly changing.  Which is a good thing.  I don’t ever want to get stuck in a style rut (btw, if you’re style is stuck, check out my style services to see how I can help free you from your wardrobe woes…. Not a shameless plug!)  Okay where was I…. Oh yea, even though I’ve been a long time fan of the skinny jean, I’m stepping out to explore other jean options.

Enter these oversized baggy distressed jeans (that I absolutely LOVE).  I nearly passed on them because they are almost toooo big.  Glad I went with my style mind instead of my rational mind.  With fall right around the bend, I’ve already have at least 5 more ways to wear them.

For this look I went for a mixture of feminine and masculine.  Borrowing from the boys I decided on this contrast stripped button-down and from the girls these heeled sandals and floral embellished box clutch.  It’s simple yet it still makes a statement.

Be on the look out guys, these jeans will probably be in heavy rotation this fall.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you…  What are your thoughts on baggy jeans?  Let’s talk in the comments.

Thrifted Duster & Ripped Jeans + Weekend Recap

Atlanta Personal Stylist, Top Atlanta Blogger, Thrifted fashion

I'm walking into this rainy Monday morning feeling wonderful.  If you recall, I had the opportunity to speak to a group of World Natural Hair Show attendees a little bit about the joy of thrifting this past Saturday.

And not to be all braggy, however, ya girl did her thing.  If I do say so myself, I did really good.  If you know me, then you know I use to HATE public speaking and I still don't like it.  Man, I'd get so nervous, I would forget whatever it was I was suppose to say.  I remember once I even forgot my own name.  The only thing I'd do is smile really hard and my underarms would be drenched in sweat.  Talk about embarrassing...

But this weekend, I nailed it!  I was prepared, I had nicely designed handouts aaannnddd I remembered the majority of my notes without having to look at them.  Yesss!  One thing I've been working on is not saying "um" so much.  Learning to pace myself and breath helped me to avoid using "um" throughout the session.

The coolest part for me was that people were waiting in line to talk to me.  To some that might not mean much, but for me, it means progress (patting myself on the back).  Even cooler was that my homegirl Kisha came out to support.  That gesture of love meant a lot.  Thanks Kish!  And a shout-out to my mentor Keren for calling me on Friday and Saturday to give me my pep talk and a word of encouragement.  Btw... check out what I wore to the hair show.

Blah blah blah, enough of that, on to the real reason you came by today.  You want to know details on today's look.  This outfit is perfect for the type of weather we're having here in Atlanta (the type where winter and spring are playing tug-of-war with the temperature).  Just when you think the sun has the upper hand, the clouds are like naw, not today bruh.  That's why this outfit works.

This Forever 21 duster that I thrifted is heavy enough to keep me warm during the morning chill and cool enough to wear when the temp's start to rise.  I was hoping to find a similar duster on F21.com, but If you wanted to recreate this look, this duster/kimono from Boo Hoo would work just as well.  I'm going to keep saying this... if you do not have a pair of distressed jeans, your life is a mess (I kid, I kid).  But seriously, ripped jeans will change your life.

Why would I buy ripped jeans retail, when I can thrift them?  Like these H&M distressed jeans which are super cute, really comfortable and has a nice wash. I paired the look with a simple off-white top and green floral print booties from Zara (got them on sale, no longer available).  A fringe bucket bag and a cool pair of sunglasses completed this outfit.

Looking for a few nice dusters/kimono's?  Check these out ↓↓↓

Cobalt Blue Trench, Marvel Comic Tee, Distressed Jeans

Top Atlanta Style Blogger, Black Blogger, Atlanta Street Fashion

Happy feel good Friday people!!!  I think we've finally made it to hot coco weather (I think).  And all I'm saying is it's about time.  Over the last few weeks I've been slowly building my sweater collection and I'm super excited that maybe this time around, I'll actually get to wear them.

Besides Spring, Fall is my next favorite season.  I just love fall fashion.  My go-to looks this season are going to consist of layering the heck outta my wardrobe.  I'm also looking forward to adding more bold colored coats to my closet.  Like the one I'm wearing in today's look.

Of course I thrifted this cobalt blue trench, but if you can find one retail, you need to get it (you'll thank me later).  There's something daring about wearing bold colors, especially in the cooler months.  It exudes so much life, energy and confidence.

The first time I wore this blue trench (here), you couldn't tell me nothing.  But this time around I opted for a more causal approach.  I absolutely love that the length of the trench is perfect for my 5' frame.  In honor of Thor: Ragnarok hitting theaters last weekend (which if you're a huge comic fan like me, you need to see this movie!), I wore a Marvel tee over a pair of distressed jeans.  The super cute rose gold mules added a bit of festive flair sense it's the holiday season. To complete the look I choose this shiny red bagBold on bold on bold!!!

I Hosted A Shopping Party. It Didn't Go As Planned. Here's What I Learned.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Black and white street style, Atlanta style blogger, Shoedazzle, Justfabe, Shein

As a style blogger, I'm constantly adding new pieces to my wardrobe.  And to keep my closets from looking like I belong on the show Hoarders, I purge.  So I had this crazy idea to host a shopping party.  Not just any shopping party, but a shop the blogger's closet shopping party.  I thought it would be really cool to gather up a few bloggers from the Atlanta area, setup a boutique styled space and let the public come to shop their heart's out or at least until their money ran out.  Well things didn't go quite as I had planned.

As I'm sure most events go, things almost never go 100% the way it was envisioned or planned.  While I won't get into all the things that went 'wrong', I will say that I will probable never host a brunch again!  The blogger's closet shopping party, Yes!  Just not the brunch...

Saturday's event taught me to push pass the point of disappointment.  To overlook what I can't control.  To get over the feelings of failure.  I learned that in order to get to the top I'm going to have to take risks.  If I'm going to be great, I'll have to kick my comfort zone to the curb.

5 Simple, Yet Cool Ways To Nail The White-T Trend

If you don't have a white tee in your wardrobe, shame on you!  It's hands down one of the easiest item of clothing to keep in your closet.  It's literally a classic and super comfortable.  To date I probably have at least 10 different white tee's.  While I'm only giving you 5 really easy ways to style this closet staple, the possibilities are endless.

Pairing a slightly longer tee over some distressed denim with a colorful blazer and a killer pair of heels for a street glam look is everything, right?  And if you want to be super cool, try tucking in the front of your shirt.

In some cases a V-neck tee is so much better than a regular crew neck.  Why?  They make you look a lot cooler - wink, wink!  But really it's only a matter of personal preference.  V-necks can give your look a little sex appeal.

Dressing down a fancy bottom with a white tee is not as hard as it may seem.  Whether you're sashaying around town in a shiny gold sequin skirt or an all black leather mini; with your statement accessories and a bad girl attitude... You've now become the IT girl!

While I'm not a huge fan of crop tops, they are so cute.  They can be worn with so many different pieces in an array of styles.  And before you completely write off not wearing them, give it a try.  I'm pretty sure there's a way for you to shine in a crop.

Graphic tee's can directly express who you are without you even having to open your month.  What better way to make a statement then to "say it with ya chest" - Kevin Hart  Don't be afraid to sub out a plain white tee and go for the way cooler graphic tee.

I Hate This Look! And It's Too Late To Change... Now What?

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Denim on denim, wearing shirt backwards, distressed jeans, Atlanta style blogger

Being the creative that I am, I'm constantly pondering ways to make my outfits stand out!  I knew I wanted to wear these jeans but I hadn't figured out the top or shoes just yet.  Then it came to me!.  I'll do the denim on denim trend but instead of wearing the shirt correctly, I'll wear it backwards.  Now in my head this look was bang'n, but in actuality I just do not like how it came out.

Top & Bottom -- Thrifted // Shoes -- Charlotte Russe (sold out)(similar) // Sunglasses -- Boga Boga

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Denim on denim, wearing shirt backwards, distressed jeans, Atlanta style blogger

Now that I see the outfit for what it is, I would have done a little more to this look to make it really dope.  Adding some pins and broaches on the "front" would have taken the look up a notch.  Maybe rolled up the sleeves some more to allow for more arm candy.  A handbag would have been nice too.  Or maybe a colorful headscarf would have livened up this plain look.

Despite this outfit fail, I held my head high and rocked on like it was nothing.  Life has taught me to be confident even when I don't feel like it.  I faced this blah outfit situation with grace and the security of knowing that I can't be "IT" all the time.  But most of time I'm THAT GIRL!  Lol, ha! ha! ha!

Have you ever worn something that you was just like what the heck, but it was too late to so anything about it?  What did you do?

4 Steps To Getting Rid Of The Monday Blues

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style Blogger, Street Fashion, Black and White outfit

By now you're probably well into your day and you still feel like blah.  SNAP OUT OF IT!  Today is the day to "David Your Goliath!"  - Mattie James.

Chances are you came into work this morning feeling like here we go again.  The rigmarole of the work week is pressing hard upon you and you keep asking yourself... Why?!?!  Why am I here?  Well guys it's because you want to be.  Don't side-eye me just yet, here me out.  Being in Corporate America for the last 11 years has taught me a lot.  So I don't regret it.  I am disappointed that I've sat here so long doubting myself and my talents.  But not anymore.

Story time -- Early last year I told myself that that was my last year working in Corp Amer.  Forget crawling, I was running into full time entrepreneurship.  I had it all mapped out (in my mind.)  Once I quit, things would just fall into place.  My clientele would immediately grow.  Clients would be at my door waiting for me. Right?  Wrong!  My plan was short lived.  The reason being, plain and simple was that I failed to plan!  A dream without a plan is just a wish - tweet this.  That reality hit me like a ton of bricks.  Without a plan my vision lacked direction, consistency and purpose.  Guy's it's not that we don't have the guts to grind, but that we lack the proper tools to succeed.  This is the reason Monday's are hard.

When you become resentful, envious or jealous of other women; This is a dead ringer that it's time for a change.   If you're at the point that enough is enough and that you're sick and tired of being sick and tired follow these 4 Steps to help you get rid of the Monday dumps:

  1. Pray! Pray! Pray!  I can't stress this enough.  And then listen...
  2. Proclaim out loud that things are going to change.  Remember life and death lies within the tongue.  You have the power to speak into your life.
  3. Write the vision.  Writing helps you remember the goal.  Because seeing is believing.
  4. Find and connect yourself to a person or group of people who can pour into to you.

Wow, I didn't realize I could be such a talker.  But for real, I hope that reading this post encourages you as well as it did for me writing it.  Let me know below in the comments.  And Have A Happy Monday's!!!

Why Throwing In The Towel Won't Do Any Good

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta wardrobe stylist

I recently celebrated a birthday and this time around got me kinda messed up.  I can remember being 18/19 thinking, I'll never make it to 25.  But on May 5th, I turned 39.  Wow! 39.  And they say time fly's when you're having fun, but time fly's whether you're having fun or not.  Today's post was suppose to go out last week, but because life happen's, you're getting it today.

Soo... In the months leading up to my birthday, I started feeling a little dispirited because I've allowed so much time to pass by because of fear, uncertainty and plain ol lack of confidence.  Playing the comparison game is a beast.  And starting from scratch isn't any better either, at least for me. Trying to grow a business in an already over saturated field with 20 and early 30 year old's is scary and if I'm honest, makes me kinda nervous.  Sometimes I wonder if I should just throw in the towel.  But I can't!  If for no other reason, I owe it to myself.  I owe it to my husband and children.  I owe it to the people who are looking to me as a sign that dreams do come true.  So instead of throwing in the towel, I've decided to keep it and use it to wipe away the sweat from the grind.

A few months ago I was scrolling through Facebook when I come across the story about Harland Sanders, better known as Colonel Sanders.  Did you know that he was 62 when he franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken?  He struggle most of his life trying to make ends meet before KFC made him a house whole name.  Man listening to this story really lit a fire in me.  It also made me curious about other people who didn't "blow up" until after 40.  Vera Wang didn't start her fashion career until she was 40.  Today she's one of the world's premier women's designers.  Betty White is one of the most award-winning comedic actresses in history, but she didn't become an icon until she joined the cast of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in 1973 at age 51.  Comedian/Actress Leslie Jones was 47 when her appearance on SNL propelled her into the stardom. These are only a handful of individuals who became successful after 40.

Guys I'm motivated more than ever and throwing in the towel just means more laundry, lol.  Today is the perfect day to start living your dreams.  And one more thing...

"You simply cannot afford to NOT say what you want. You have to say it...even when it's awkward, uncomfortable, weird...whatever."

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta blogger, Atlanta Stylist, Atlanta street style

Hey! hey! hey!  I dropped two posts in one day, ayyeee!  Read the other one here.

As a thrifter, I often times struggle with paying regular price for new items.  Not that I'm cheap or frugal as I'd like to call it.  It's just that I've found so many unique pieces at the thrift stop for little to nothing, I've been spoiled by resale price points.  But every now and then, I come across a piece that I'm willing to stretch my pockets to get.  When one of my fave Atlanta style bloggers Monica of AwedbyMonica debuted her look here , I had to have it.  I won't lie, when I first saw the price I was like - heck no!  Guys, it was only like $45.  I know, I know! And to think, I pay more than that for shoes.  Needless to say, I bought it.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! I hope your day is filled with food, fun and family fellowship.  So we all know what happens after thanksgiving; the infamous Black Friday shopping.  I've participated in Black Friday shopping twice and I'll never do it again.  But for those of you who are willing to fight the good fight of a bang'n sale, why not do it in style.  Today's outfit is perfect for the shopping season.  Blazers give almost any outfit an effortless look and you should have at least one in your wardrobe; it's a staple.  Denim jeans are timeless and distressed denim just makes you look even cooler.  I went with this floral print button down because plain ol' white was just to easy.  Heels and shopping don't go together, so these men inspired oxfords give this look the flare it needed.

Distressed Denim + Cream Blazer

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style Blogger, Distressed Denim, Cream Blazer

Wow!  Can you believe that it's October and we only have 74 days left until 2017!  This year has been filled with a lot of twists and turns, but I'm determined to finish this year strong.  So a few months ago, I mentioned that some good things were about to happen to me.  Little did I know that before the end of the year I'd be a first time homeowner.  This house was tailor made for me as it comes with a bonus room that's big enough for me to house all my shoes, clothes and space for my future home office.

My two fave season's are spring and fall.  Fall because I get to break out all the blazers I've thrifted over the summer.  Blazer are my go to as they can dress up or down almost any look.  Today I paired this cream blazer with a T and some distressed jeans.  Such a effortless outfit to pull together on those days when you want to be causal but cute at the same time.

OMG! Finally able to chit chat with you guys for a bit.  I have been really busy.  You know you have to be real careful about what you say because you can change your world just by speaking into it.  Months ago I said that some great things were about to happen and sure enough awesomely great things are happening.  I can't wait to spill the beans when the time is right.  For now, let's talk about

today's #ootd.  The denim top, the crop top and the distressed jeans were all thrifted.  I actually got the top from the men's section.  And tell me why does my clutch cost more than my outfit, crazy right.  Even more crazy is that I was tripping out during the photo shoot because I felt like to much of my mini muffin top was showing.  Despite being petite I still have body insecurities; Yet I'm learning daily to adore my body and love all of it's "flaws."  Take-aways from today's post is to throw caution to the wind and be like Nike - Just Do It!
