I Accidentally Took The Week Off Of Social Media

Atlanta Personal Stylist, Top Atlanta Blogger, African inspired street style

Hello, my name is Melodie and I’m addicted to social media, Instagram to be precise. They say the first step to overcoming an addiction is to first admit you have a problem and then to seek treatment.

As much as I might pretend that I’m unbothered whenever I’m scrolling down my IG feed, the lie detector determine I wasn’t being totally truthful. Social media whether you think so or not can make you feel inadequate and if you’re not careful you might even question your entire existence. Okay so maybe that’s a little farfetched, but you get my drift.

Don’t get me wrong, social media is wonderful.  It’s a great platform to express yourself and to showcase to the world your gifts, talents and skills.  It has also allowed careers to take off, unimaginable opportunities have been received, even a few people have met the love of their lives via social.  But at what point is enough, enough?

If you would’ve told me 4 years ago when I posted my first IG pic that I’d get sucked into this endless portal of follows, likes and comments, I would have rolled my eyes and laughed at you.  Little did I know….  I had it so bad that my phone was the first thing I reached for in the morning.  Not to check the time or the weather, but to see what I missed on IG and FB.  Sad!

When I say I accidentally took a week off from social, it was more on purpose than I realized.  I’d gotten overwhelmed with trying to keep up with the analytics, making sure I was consistent (because consistency is king, right) and other people’s IG version of success.  I’m being honest here.  I couldn’t take it, so I decided I wasn’t going to post until I felt like it.

In recent years I’ve come to realized that I’d been subconsciously comparing my life with a bunch of square pictures that have been perfectly curated to appear that life is cotton candy and unicorns.  Which is why taking a break was so needed.  And going forward I’ll be making a conscience effort to step away more often.  The goal will be to detach myself from unrealistic or untimely expectations of myself.  To stay focused on my own goals and to make the most of my time.  The main reason is to break the cycle of comparing my chapter 15 to someone else’s chapter 32.

Have you ever thought about the amount of time you spend scrolling down IG or FB?  Your phone has (or should have) the capability to tell you which app you use the most and depending on the type of phone you have can tell you the average amount of time you spend on the app. My phone tells me I spend a lot of time on the gram with Facebook right on it’s heels.

What say ye?  Are you guilty of falling into the the social trap? Could you challenge yourself to detox from social media?  For me it was a week; but next time it may be a month. Let me know in the comments.

Camo Pants That Are Worth Repeating

Atlanta personal stylist, Top Atlanta blogger, Camo street style

Once upon a time there was a young lady (me) who would have never been caught wearing something twice, especially if the look was captured on the gram.  I mean, where day do dat at (in my slang voice, cause I'm cool like that)?  But then one day this young lady woke up and realized that that was the most craziest thing ever.  She understood that she was being uppity for no good reason and remembered she didn't have the closet of Rihanna.  After all what sense did it make to buy something I obviously liked only to wear it once?  Cray, right?

After I got over the "Repeat Outfit Offender" syndrome, I gained a better appreciation for my clothes and became more focused on making the most of my wardrobe.  While I very rarely repeat a look, I do wear items over and over.  I've said this before and I'll say it again for the people in the back.  When considering adding pieces to your wardrobe, before you buy it, envision at least 3-4 different ways to style that item with pieces you already have in your closet.  The goal is to maximize your wardrobes full potential, not to become a hoarder.  Maximizing your wardrobe means mixing and matching pieces that you already have to create different looks.

Take these camo pants for instance.  This look is my 8th (or 9th) time styling these fatigues and each time I've replaced one or two pieces from the previous look to create a whole other outfit. Here are two good examples of the rare occasions when I've worn AND been photographed in the same look; the difference between the two is for the first look, I wore floral print block heels and paired it with a mixed print clutch.  Yet for the second look, I opted for flatform shoes and accessorized with a leopard print belt.  You see that with only a few subtle changes, you can create different looks with pieces you already have.  So you know I have to ask, which look is your fave?

Just in case you're curious about the other ways I've styled these pants >>> Go HERE!!!  And last but not least, you can follow my style journey on Instagram -- @thestyleklazit.

I'm Wearing My Feelings

Atlanta top blogger, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta Personal stylist

It almost never fails that when Thursday hits, I have a moment of - "Is today Thursday or Friday"?  I mean I literally have to look at a calendar to confirm what day it is.  Does this ever happen to you?  Sometimes I wonder if the reason why I'm having these semi lapses in time is because I'm not happy about having to wake up early in the morning, travel 40-45 minutes (one way) to a job that doesn't excite me or challenge my creativity.

Atlanta top blogger, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta Personal stylist

My career goals were simple.  I'd go to college, get my BS in nursing, work as a trauma nurse for 10-12 years, quit and then work for myself as a fashion stylist.  But we all know that even the best laid plans...

Today's outfit sorta describes how I've been feeling lately.  All mixed up.  Although the first part of my career goals didn't pan out, I still have my sights set on being a successful entrepreneur.  For the last few years I've envisioned myself getting up for work only to call my manager and telling her 'I Quit'.  Today was one of those days.

Honestly I think the reason I haven't done it is because I'm scared.  Whew!  I said it.  I think this is the first time I've actually embraced (outside of my head) that I'm scared.  I'm afraid of the unknown.  What if no one hires me?  What if a client hires me and I can't get the job done?  What if I don't make enough money to support my family?  What if!  What if!  What if!!!!!  Somebody said, the What if's and the Should have's will eat your brain.

Maybe that why I haven't been as inspired lately.  I mean the struggle has been fo'real fo'real.  Just writing this post took a lot out of me.  Yet!  I won't be defeated.  I won't allow discouragement to beat the crap out of me.  Instead of letting fear get the best of me, I'm taken the advise I give my son when he's scared; just because you're afraid doesn't mean I let fear take over me.

Fear aside, let me tell you how I fight these feelings.  My weapon of choice is my tongue.  Do you understand how powerful the tongue is?  It's more powerful than any two-edged sword.  Life (and death) lies in the power of what we speak.  That's why I make sure what I speak matches my goals.  Even at my lowest, I refuse to speak against my future.  Y'all I was about to start preaching, ha! ha! ha!.

Anywho, I hope this post will uplift you in some way and I pray that you find the strength to go back, grab those dreams you though died and speak life to them. It's not to late.

Same Fatigue Pants, 7 Different Ways

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style blogger, Fatigue street style, Mixed prints

A couple years ago, I really wanted a pair of army fatigue pants.  So imagine my surprise when one day while at the thrift store (in the mens section) I find a pair in my size and for only two bucks.  The print on these fatigues give off such a bold statement, I never imagined that I'd have so much fun styling them.  Today is my 7th time wearing them; Well really my 8th.  There was the one time I tried wearing a crop top, but the way my mom-gut is set up....  The look turned into a no-go.  I was kinda bombed about it too, because the outfit was really cute.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style blogger, Fatigue street style, Mixed prints

It's usually when I'm laying in bed that a look will come to mind.  I wanted to wear the pants again, but I wasn't sure how.  After a few moments of mentally going through my closet, I started piecing together the look in my head.  That's usually how most of my looks come together.  I very rarely try anything on.  If it looks good in my head, it should translate well when I actually wear it.  There have been those few times when the looks are a complete fail.  Every time I think I'm ready to give up my fatigues, I think about another way to style them.

Today's look is me doing the most (insert slight eye roll and head shake).  Instead of just being okay with the white button down shirt and white sneakers and maybe a cute little handbag; I had to go over board by adding the floral print necktie and these cute black and white stripped sandals from ShoeDazzle.  I love mixing prints.  What do you think?  Could you see yourself wearing this outfit?

5 Simple, Yet Cool Ways To Nail The White-T Trend

If you don't have a white tee in your wardrobe, shame on you!  It's hands down one of the easiest item of clothing to keep in your closet.  It's literally a classic and super comfortable.  To date I probably have at least 10 different white tee's.  While I'm only giving you 5 really easy ways to style this closet staple, the possibilities are endless.

Pairing a slightly longer tee over some distressed denim with a colorful blazer and a killer pair of heels for a street glam look is everything, right?  And if you want to be super cool, try tucking in the front of your shirt.

In some cases a V-neck tee is so much better than a regular crew neck.  Why?  They make you look a lot cooler - wink, wink!  But really it's only a matter of personal preference.  V-necks can give your look a little sex appeal.

Dressing down a fancy bottom with a white tee is not as hard as it may seem.  Whether you're sashaying around town in a shiny gold sequin skirt or an all black leather mini; with your statement accessories and a bad girl attitude... You've now become the IT girl!

While I'm not a huge fan of crop tops, they are so cute.  They can be worn with so many different pieces in an array of styles.  And before you completely write off not wearing them, give it a try.  I'm pretty sure there's a way for you to shine in a crop.

Graphic tee's can directly express who you are without you even having to open your month.  What better way to make a statement then to "say it with ya chest" - Kevin Hart  Don't be afraid to sub out a plain white tee and go for the way cooler graphic tee.

Fatigues + Red Boots

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta stylist, Atlanta street fashion

Fashion is a statement not style.  Style is a reflection of your attitude and your personality.  What I like (love) about my personal style is that it's versatile and it reflects how I feel on any given day.  Today I'm feeling a little badd - wink!  I've had these fatigue pants for a couple years and each time I wear them I create a different look - see here, here & here.  I think off all the looks, I like this one the best.  I diy'd the hoodie by adding left over jewels from my NYE look (here) and a few beads from a pearl necklace I had.  I knew I wanted to pair these red boots but I went back and forth with myself about the red frames.  Adding the black moto just made me superbad, lol.  What do you think?  What does your badd outfit look like?

What up y'all!  Happy Monday!  Whewww, what a week and weekend I've had.  Last week was my son's spring break and he spent it with his godparents.  I thought that this would be a week of relaxation but NOT SO

Dropped him off last Sunday and the rest of the week was a blur.  My plan was to come home and chill with hubs. Instead every evening I was in the streets.  From my bi-weekly chiropractor visits, a JustFab Diamond Elite Mixer, the debut of an old friends SS16 collection and a styling gig for the Spring 16 Urban Prep collection of

Burgundy Moto + Army Fatigue

Atlanta style blogger, style blogger, Atlanta blogger, natural girls killing it, street style, Moto Jacket, Fatigue Pants

I feel like we just got into January and now we're almost at the end.  Maybe it's due to the fact that I celebrated Christmas, New Years and my wedding anniversary all within a 20 day span.  A girl could get use to this...

Now that we're into the new month, I have already hit the ground running.  My husband has already given me the green light regarding my exit plan from my 9 to 5.  Even before the new year hit, I was already busy planning the ways that I can create multiple streams of income.  Although I know what I wanted to do, I really didn't know how to execute it.  But that all changed when I got wind of the live streaming app - Pericsope

(download the app and follow me @thestyleklazit).

I started following a number of #ladybosses who weren't afraid to share the knowledge that got them to where they are now.  Just wait guys, I've got some good things coming this year that will help you in all your styling needs.

Weekend of Fashion & Fun - Mixologist / pt. 2

Atlanta style blogger, style blogger, Atlanta blogger, Mixed prints, thrifted fashion, street style, black and white, fatigue pants

Welcome back Stylenista's...

If you haven't read part 1 of my fashion fun filled weekend, check it out here.  I love fashion shows.  I've organized, directed, hosted and even styled for several shows.  So when my thrift sisters Wendy of (justjewels4u) and Cindy of (iampriiincesss) posted that they were putting on a fashion show, no doubt I was there.  The show was great.  I would have rocked just about each looked that graced the runway.  Clickhere for a few pics from the show.

Now about my look.  To some it may be a lot going own, but for me it was très chic.  I planned this look about a week before the fashion show in my head.  I was hoping to try it own just to make sure it would look okay, but never got around to it.  So, it was going to have to work - no matter what.

Hi Stylenista's,

It's HUMP Day! Happy Wednesday!!

I would like to start by saying 'Thank You' to the thriftgods for favoring me with these army fatigue pants (which have been on my thrift wishlist for some time now.)  Whenever I'm thrifting, I very seldom visit the men's section.  However, the thriftgods guided me (subconsciously) to the men's pants section and there it hung, waiting for me.  I almost knocked over another shopper trying to get to them.  Immediately I started envisioning the different ways I would style them.  If I didn't purchase anything else, these were coming home with me.  If I do say so myself, I retro chic slayed (I just made that up) in this look; from head to toe.  Everything is thrifted except for the shoes and accessories.
