Thrifted Duster & Ripped Jeans + Weekend Recap

Atlanta Personal Stylist, Top Atlanta Blogger, Thrifted fashion

I'm walking into this rainy Monday morning feeling wonderful.  If you recall, I had the opportunity to speak to a group of World Natural Hair Show attendees a little bit about the joy of thrifting this past Saturday.

And not to be all braggy, however, ya girl did her thing.  If I do say so myself, I did really good.  If you know me, then you know I use to HATE public speaking and I still don't like it.  Man, I'd get so nervous, I would forget whatever it was I was suppose to say.  I remember once I even forgot my own name.  The only thing I'd do is smile really hard and my underarms would be drenched in sweat.  Talk about embarrassing...

But this weekend, I nailed it!  I was prepared, I had nicely designed handouts aaannnddd I remembered the majority of my notes without having to look at them.  Yesss!  One thing I've been working on is not saying "um" so much.  Learning to pace myself and breath helped me to avoid using "um" throughout the session.

The coolest part for me was that people were waiting in line to talk to me.  To some that might not mean much, but for me, it means progress (patting myself on the back).  Even cooler was that my homegirl Kisha came out to support.  That gesture of love meant a lot.  Thanks Kish!  And a shout-out to my mentor Keren for calling me on Friday and Saturday to give me my pep talk and a word of encouragement.  Btw... check out what I wore to the hair show.

Blah blah blah, enough of that, on to the real reason you came by today.  You want to know details on today's look.  This outfit is perfect for the type of weather we're having here in Atlanta (the type where winter and spring are playing tug-of-war with the temperature).  Just when you think the sun has the upper hand, the clouds are like naw, not today bruh.  That's why this outfit works.

This Forever 21 duster that I thrifted is heavy enough to keep me warm during the morning chill and cool enough to wear when the temp's start to rise.  I was hoping to find a similar duster on F21.com, but If you wanted to recreate this look, this duster/kimono from Boo Hoo would work just as well.  I'm going to keep saying this... if you do not have a pair of distressed jeans, your life is a mess (I kid, I kid).  But seriously, ripped jeans will change your life.

Why would I buy ripped jeans retail, when I can thrift them?  Like these H&M distressed jeans which are super cute, really comfortable and has a nice wash. I paired the look with a simple off-white top and green floral print booties from Zara (got them on sale, no longer available).  A fringe bucket bag and a cool pair of sunglasses completed this outfit.

Looking for a few nice dusters/kimono's?  Check these out ↓↓↓

Work Wear: Grey Sweater Dress + Red OTK Boots

Work Wear - Grey Sweater Dress Red OTK Boots

The weather here in Atlanta lately has been on one.  Within these last 23 days of January, we've gone from freezing rain one day, snow the next and just over the weekend the temps reached the mid 60's.  Crazy right?  The day I shoot this look the temps were in the low 30's.  Kaylin (my photographer) and I almost froze to death.

Work Wear - Grey Sweater Dress Red OTK Boots

How many times have you purchased something and forgot you had it until you went looking for something else?  That's exactly what happened with this grey sweater dress.  I've had it for about 3 years and have only worn it twice because I keep forgetting that I have it.  The first time I wore this grey dress was here I didn't do it justice.  This time around I put a little more thought into how I wanted to style it.  I love the big front pockets on the dress, it adds character.  Although it's a turtleneck, I like that it's not to tight on my neck.  What I dig most about this sweater dress is the color.  While grey is one of the more popular colors in the cooler months, this light shade of grey is a much better option to brighten up this work wear look.

Of course the dress I'm wearing today is no longer available, but you know I stay looking out for you.  Below I've linked to a few options that would definitely work if you're wanting to recreate this look.  This grey sweater dress from H&M is a super cute alternative.  And Shein's version hit the nail on the head with this sweater dress.  Check out the SHOP THE POST link below for a few other options.

The color red has never grown on me until now.  All of a sudden, I'm crushing on red shoes.  And these boots, bbaaaabbbbyyyyy!  Are e-very-thang!  Did you catch the first time I debuted these candy apple red OTK boots?  Go here.  I am in love with these boots from Shoeland (and so is hubs - wink.)  I wanted to make a statement and these boots did just that.  The pop of color for sure took this look to the next level.  If you're not in the otk boot trend at the workplace, these red Asos booties are a great second choice.  And these too from F21.  I paired this look with my fave black moto from H&M ( sold out, but this one from Asos is a nice runner up and this Forever 21 grey handbag from a few season's ago.

I hope you like this look as much and I do and that it inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and be willing to try something a little different.  Drop a line in the comments and let me know what you think about this look.

Why Is The Hustle Sold Separtly? Why?

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Overalls, Krog Street

Today is one of those days when I just don't feel like adulting. As soon as my alarm went off this morning I wanted to throw the phone across the room (but I didn't since it's the new Samsung Galaxy S8+ that I just got last week and I l-o-v-e it!!!) I only wanted to lay in my bed and do absolutely nothing. Have you ever felt this way before?

I think it has something to do with me feeling confined. I mean 5 days a week I get up and travel to a job that I'm not thrill about. I don't even fit in with cooperate culture. It's kinda bad too, because the majority of the work day I'm struggling to keep my mind from constantly drifting to ways I can grow my personal styling client base or providing valuable consistent blog content.  Which brings me to today's blog question... Why is the hustle sold separately?

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Overalls, Krog Street

I realize that nothing in life worth having comes easy and I know that struggle comes along with the territory.  I just wish that I knew somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody who could magically make things all better.  But if that happened I probably wouldn't be as grateful for the reward as I would be by putting in the werk.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Overalls, Krog Street

Dreaming requires minimal effort.  A dream without a plan is just a wish.  So what's it going to take to turn this dream into a reality?  Grab your note book for this next part.  Here's the hustle game plan.

1. Set goals
Don't allow your mind to be filled with empty dreams.  Set realist goals.  And if you're feeling greasy,  set unrealistic goals.  Let your mind run free with endless possibilities.

2. Plan
Get an actionable plan together.  What is it going to take to turn a thought into real life?

3. Speak it out loud
There's power in the tongue.  Even if you don't see it, say it!

4. If you fail
Get back up and keep trying.  You've only lost is you stop trying.

5. Push thru
     Refuse to settle!

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Overalls, Krog Street

I hope you've read something that will encourage you to keep going.  As much as I wanted to hid from the world today, I got out my bed and pulled myself together and forced myself to take Dory's (from Finding Nemo) advice and just keep going.

I Hosted A Shopping Party. It Didn't Go As Planned. Here's What I Learned.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Black and white street style, Atlanta style blogger, Shoedazzle, Justfabe, Shein

As a style blogger, I'm constantly adding new pieces to my wardrobe.  And to keep my closets from looking like I belong on the show Hoarders, I purge.  So I had this crazy idea to host a shopping party.  Not just any shopping party, but a shop the blogger's closet shopping party.  I thought it would be really cool to gather up a few bloggers from the Atlanta area, setup a boutique styled space and let the public come to shop their heart's out or at least until their money ran out.  Well things didn't go quite as I had planned.

As I'm sure most events go, things almost never go 100% the way it was envisioned or planned.  While I won't get into all the things that went 'wrong', I will say that I will probable never host a brunch again!  The blogger's closet shopping party, Yes!  Just not the brunch...

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Black and white street style, Atlanta style blogger, Shoedazzle, Justfabe, Shein

Saturday's event taught me to push pass the point of disappointment.  To overlook what I can't control.  To get over the feelings of failure.  I learned that in order to get to the top I'm going to have to take risks.  If I'm going to be great, I'll have to kick my comfort zone to the curb.

Weekend Style Challenge

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta style blogger, Distressed shorts, olive duster, We love Atlanta, Weekend style inspiration

Whew! It's finally Friday. But it's been Friday for me since Wednesday. This week has just been one of those weeks where I felt like I was in the twilight zone. So I'm delighted that it's actually Friday.  Now let the weekend merriment begin.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta style blogger, Distressed shorts, olive duster, We love Atlanta, Weekend style inspiration

For the past few weeks I've been super lazy about getting dressed.  I've been putting little to no effort at all into my wardrobe.  It's not for lack of clothes options,  I just haven't felt like it.  The slay (in real life) hasn't been real.  Nevertheless, it's the weekend and what better way to get out of this funk than with a style challenge.  Because if you look good you feel good, right?

Weekends for me usually mean family time.  Which, besides cleaning, may include grocery store shopping, going to the movies or home shopping (since we just bought a home last October.)  Typically if I'm running around with hubs and his mini me, I want to be comfortable.  However lately, I've been sacrificing cute for comfort.  Well guys the buck stops here! Today I do swear to be in style, nothing but style, so help me. And I challenge you to do the same.

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta style blogger, Distressed shorts, olive duster, We love Atlanta, Weekend style inspiration

Because my usual get-up generally consist of jeans, a T-shirt and a cool pair of shades, I decided to step this look up a notch.  So in lieu of my old faithful jeans, I opted for a pair of shorts I distressed from my local thrift shop.  I replaced the tee shirt for this peacock sleeve inspired top and layered this too small dress, dubbed olive duster for an element of street chic.  When it came to what bag to carry, I was undecided.  Should I wear the red crossbody from ShoeDazzle or the camel satchel with tassels.  Clearly the crossbody won.  I think it was the pompom that did it.  I should have gone with a sandal, because the arch on this bootie from Charlotte Russe was nothing nice to my feet.  But beauty is pain, huh?!

This weekend I challenge you to boldly wear something you have never worn before.  Get out of your comfort zone and make yourself wear something that you wouldn't ordinarily wear on the weekend.  If you're up for the challenge let me know in the comments.  Have a happy, fun and stylish weekend!!!

I Hate This Look! And It's Too Late To Change... Now What?

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Denim on denim, wearing shirt backwards, distressed jeans, Atlanta style blogger

Being the creative that I am, I'm constantly pondering ways to make my outfits stand out!  I knew I wanted to wear these jeans but I hadn't figured out the top or shoes just yet.  Then it came to me!.  I'll do the denim on denim trend but instead of wearing the shirt correctly, I'll wear it backwards.  Now in my head this look was bang'n, but in actuality I just do not like how it came out.

Top & Bottom -- Thrifted // Shoes -- Charlotte Russe (sold out)(similar) // Sunglasses -- Boga Boga

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Denim on denim, wearing shirt backwards, distressed jeans, Atlanta style blogger

Now that I see the outfit for what it is, I would have done a little more to this look to make it really dope.  Adding some pins and broaches on the "front" would have taken the look up a notch.  Maybe rolled up the sleeves some more to allow for more arm candy.  A handbag would have been nice too.  Or maybe a colorful headscarf would have livened up this plain look.

Despite this outfit fail, I held my head high and rocked on like it was nothing.  Life has taught me to be confident even when I don't feel like it.  I faced this blah outfit situation with grace and the security of knowing that I can't be "IT" all the time.  But most of time I'm THAT GIRL!  Lol, ha! ha! ha!

Have you ever worn something that you was just like what the heck, but it was too late to so anything about it?  What did you do?

4 Steps To Getting Rid Of The Monday Blues

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style Blogger, Street Fashion, Black and White outfit

By now you're probably well into your day and you still feel like blah.  SNAP OUT OF IT!  Today is the day to "David Your Goliath!"  - Mattie James.

Chances are you came into work this morning feeling like here we go again.  The rigmarole of the work week is pressing hard upon you and you keep asking yourself... Why?!?!  Why am I here?  Well guys it's because you want to be.  Don't side-eye me just yet, here me out.  Being in Corporate America for the last 11 years has taught me a lot.  So I don't regret it.  I am disappointed that I've sat here so long doubting myself and my talents.  But not anymore.

Story time -- Early last year I told myself that that was my last year working in Corp Amer.  Forget crawling, I was running into full time entrepreneurship.  I had it all mapped out (in my mind.)  Once I quit, things would just fall into place.  My clientele would immediately grow.  Clients would be at my door waiting for me. Right?  Wrong!  My plan was short lived.  The reason being, plain and simple was that I failed to plan!  A dream without a plan is just a wish - tweet this.  That reality hit me like a ton of bricks.  Without a plan my vision lacked direction, consistency and purpose.  Guy's it's not that we don't have the guts to grind, but that we lack the proper tools to succeed.  This is the reason Monday's are hard.

When you become resentful, envious or jealous of other women; This is a dead ringer that it's time for a change.   If you're at the point that enough is enough and that you're sick and tired of being sick and tired follow these 4 Steps to help you get rid of the Monday dumps:

  1. Pray! Pray! Pray!  I can't stress this enough.  And then listen...
  2. Proclaim out loud that things are going to change.  Remember life and death lies within the tongue.  You have the power to speak into your life.
  3. Write the vision.  Writing helps you remember the goal.  Because seeing is believing.
  4. Find and connect yourself to a person or group of people who can pour into to you.

Wow, I didn't realize I could be such a talker.  But for real, I hope that reading this post encourages you as well as it did for me writing it.  Let me know below in the comments.  And Have A Happy Monday's!!!

Why Throwing In The Towel Won't Do Any Good

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta street style, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta wardrobe stylist

I recently celebrated a birthday and this time around got me kinda messed up.  I can remember being 18/19 thinking, I'll never make it to 25.  But on May 5th, I turned 39.  Wow! 39.  And they say time fly's when you're having fun, but time fly's whether you're having fun or not.  Today's post was suppose to go out last week, but because life happen's, you're getting it today.

Soo... In the months leading up to my birthday, I started feeling a little dispirited because I've allowed so much time to pass by because of fear, uncertainty and plain ol lack of confidence.  Playing the comparison game is a beast.  And starting from scratch isn't any better either, at least for me. Trying to grow a business in an already over saturated field with 20 and early 30 year old's is scary and if I'm honest, makes me kinda nervous.  Sometimes I wonder if I should just throw in the towel.  But I can't!  If for no other reason, I owe it to myself.  I owe it to my husband and children.  I owe it to the people who are looking to me as a sign that dreams do come true.  So instead of throwing in the towel, I've decided to keep it and use it to wipe away the sweat from the grind.

A few months ago I was scrolling through Facebook when I come across the story about Harland Sanders, better known as Colonel Sanders.  Did you know that he was 62 when he franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken?  He struggle most of his life trying to make ends meet before KFC made him a house whole name.  Man listening to this story really lit a fire in me.  It also made me curious about other people who didn't "blow up" until after 40.  Vera Wang didn't start her fashion career until she was 40.  Today she's one of the world's premier women's designers.  Betty White is one of the most award-winning comedic actresses in history, but she didn't become an icon until she joined the cast of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in 1973 at age 51.  Comedian/Actress Leslie Jones was 47 when her appearance on SNL propelled her into the stardom. These are only a handful of individuals who became successful after 40.

Guys I'm motivated more than ever and throwing in the towel just means more laundry, lol.  Today is the perfect day to start living your dreams.  And one more thing...

"You simply cannot afford to NOT say what you want. You have to say it...even when it's awkward, uncomfortable, weird...whatever."

Metallic Gold skirt + Printed Pumps

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Atlanta Style Blogger, Metallic gold skirt, screen-t

Here's to another week of fabulous-ness!  Guy's my weekend was pret-ty amazing.  I got a chance to visit behind the scenes at my local Goodwill, which was awesome and yesterday I covered the Grind Pretty workshop hosted by Atlanta MUA Mimi J, go here for my recap.

I'm so unattached from pop culture, I had no idea that Beyonce and Jay Z dropped a track titled "Shining, all of this winning."  Kaylin my photographer asked me a question about the shirt and I was like, huh?  I had know idea what she was talking about.  AND, I still haven't heard the song.  But the story behind this shirt is simple, a friend designed it and asked me to wear it.  In keeping with the message on the shirt, I wore my shiny gold skirt and strappy gold printed pumps.  How are you going to shine this week?  Let me know in the comments!

Shirt Dress + Patchwork Denim

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, patchwork denim, shirt dress, cobalt backpack, shoedazzle, mirrored sunglasses, Atlanta style blogger

It's been said that a women who cuts her hair is about to change her life.  So not only did I cut my hair, I went even bolder on the color.  Check me out!  While I had no intention of going this bright, I really like it and my son thought it was pretty cool too.

Very seldom do I shop for specific pieces, typically I look for things that stand out and fit my personal style.  Mainly I envision how many ways it can be styled.  So can you imagine my amazement when I slid through the racks and found these patchwork jeans.  Sometimes, while out thrifting, I question why do people give away such awesome garments.  But then I quickly thank them and bask in the excitement of a new find.  This is another look that further solidifies my reason for thrifting.  This look can surely take me from the office to happy hour.  I paired these mixed print heels with this look to give it a fun spring feel.  The backpack was just the cherry.  Happy Tuesday style lover's!

Embellished Blazer + White Sneakers

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, Embellished Blazer, Atlanta style blogger, Shoedazzle sneakers

Guy's normally my post would have gone out earlier but fate had other plans.  I almost decided against posting so late, but blogging is sorta a stress reliever for me.  Outside of shopping, wink-wink!  Today's outfit was scheduled for a later date, but I was inspired to post it early by one of the baddest, stylish guys I follow on Ig.  Go follow Michael-Anthony of @thebigfashionguy on IG - now.  Since spring is officially here, I'm slowing transitioning my wardrobe from fall (because Atlanta didn't really have a winter) to spring.

Speaking of Ig, I often scroll through through my feed looking for style inspo when one day I scrolled up on Stylist J Bolin's feed where he posted a pic of a blazer he'd embellished for a client.  I loved it so much so that I had to create my own version.  After a few trips to the thrift store and a hot glue gun, voila!!  To keep the attention on the blazer, I wore this white sequin dress, scored last year from Plato's Closet.  To which I almost put back on the rack because I didn't like how my muffin top looked in it.  Glad I got over that.  And to complete the look, I went with - what's quickly becoming my fave shoe - ShoeDazzle's "RHIANNON" sneakers for playful feel.  I'd love to get your reaction to this look.  Drop a line below, letting me know if you'd were this outfit or not.

Distressed Skirt + Cobalt Blue Pumps

Melodie Stewart, The Style Klazit, distressed skirt, cobalt blue heels, off white vest, Atlanta style blogger, Atlanta street style, Black blogger

Hey there you lover of fashion and style.  Hope your day is going swell.

For the last few weeks, we've had some really warm weather here in Atlanta and I've been enjoying every minute of it.  Today's look is one reason why.  This colorful floral print blouse and off white vest are both light-weight and perfect for the faux spring weather.  When I'm putting a look together, my main objective is to add something that will make the outfit stand out.  Hence the distressed skirt which I've worn before (here and here.)  The only problem I had was choosing which shoe to wear.  With all the different colors, I settle on these cobalt blue 'Aphra' pumps from Justfab a few years ago.  Take a look at all three looks and let me know which is your fave.
